Things to do in Vietnam
Vietnam is a hodgepodge of experiences, serving up history, culture and natural beauty in spades. Halong Bay, the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Imperial City complex offer up some of the best things to do in Vietnam, but there’s plenty more to discover on a holiday here…
North is where most people enter the country, in the bustling capital of Hanoi. From here you can get a real feel for that city freneticism that parts of Southeast Asia are known for, and also arrange side trips to see the towering limestone karsts of Halong Bay and Bat Trang, or to the iconic Perfume Pagoda.
For a dose of Vietnam at its most authentic, head for the ancient town of Hoi An. Located in central Vietnam, it’s full to the brim with beautiful, quirky architecture: think Japanese bridges, Chinese pagodas and French windows, all set against a vibrant rainbow of houses and restaurants.
In the south, from Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon), you’ll be spoilt with things to see and do. Meander through the labyrinth that is the Cu Chi Tunnels – famous for the part it played in the Vietnam War – and stock up on local fare and souvenirs at the beloved Ben Thanh Market. This is where you can really put your haggling skills to the test. Be sure to catch a show at the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre too, and grab a delicious cup of Vietnamese coffee.
