Discover Queensland...

The Sunshine State is bursting with incredible experiences. Located in the north-east corner of Australia, you’ll discover natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef, sip coffee in laid-back Brisbane, unwind on the secluded beaches of the Nature Coast, or discover the fertile plains of the Atherton Tablelands – to name just a few. But these experiences don’t end on the mainland. In fact, just 50 minutes from Hervey Bay by ferry, Fraser Island is the shimmering jewel in Queensland’s crown…

As the largest sand island in the world, stretching over 76 miles, Fraser Island is unique. It is the only place on Earth where towering rainforests shoot skywards from sand dunes, and is home to half of the planet’s perched lakes – where depressions in dunes fill permanently with rainwater. A fact which leads us wonderfully on to Lake McKenzie, a truly heavenly spot where the waters are crystal clear, and easily one of the isle’s highlights.

Dive into freshwater lakes on Fraser, spot baby humpback whales, photograph dingoes and embark on a 4X4 beach adventure. It’s also home to the iconic Kingfisher Bay Resort – beloved for showcasing the island’s untamed, rugged charm amid 4-star decadence.

Simply put, the options here are vast and the choice of how to spend your time is blissfully yours. And, as part of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's first tour as husband and wife, it’s easy to see why this World Heritage site is such a sought-after destination.

Where to Go in Queensland

As Australia’s second largest state (seven times the size of the UK) it can be difficult to know where to start your holiday in Queensland. For holidays to southern Queensland, the most popular entry point is Brisbane, the state’s growing capital and the perfect starting point for a road trip north along the beaches and villages of Australia's Sunshine Coast, or south to the Gold Coast. For Tropical North Queensland holidays, the laid-back town of Cairns is a great entry point, with nearby Port Douglas, Palm Cove and Trinity Beach all ripe for exploration. It also boasts convenient access to the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest, the only place on the planet where two World Heritage sites sit side by side.

Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef

Cairns, in the Tropical North, is perfectly located for reef and rainforest adventures at the top of Queensland. Spend lazy days in the city chilling out and relaxing in the sunshine, shopping in the beachwear stores and sipping coffees in the cafés. Don’t miss a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef, an underwater world of colourful corals and tropical fish, perhaps by helicopter, semi-submersible vessel, on a cruise, or on a diving and snorkelling excursion.

Further north you’ll find Port Douglas and the nearby Daintree, the world’s oldest living rainforest. Far away from the trappings of life, this ancient land offers plenty of natural experiences including jungle surfing, horse riding and wildlife watching in Cape Tribulation. The waterfalls, forests and lakes of the Atherton Tablelands, accessed from the picturesque village of Kuranda, offer further adventures, as well as a unique insight into the Indigenous culture of the region.

The Sunshine Coast

Just north of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast is home to secluded beaches and a string of welcoming towns and villages, including the boutiquey, seaside getaway of Noosa, where you’ll find a selection of stylish seafood restaurants and trendy cafés. Popular with whale watchers, it’s worth spending some time in the Sunshine Coast to get under skin of the region. It’s not just about the beaches either – hike the Hinterland and the Glass House Mountains, explore the galleries and artists’ workshops, pay a visit to Australia Zoo, owned by the late Steve Irwin, and watch for wildlife in Noosa National Park.
