Rising out of the flat Albertan prairies, Calgary is one of Canada’s most diverse and youthful cities. Home to 1.5 million people, Calgary is built on universities, big businesses, and the oil and gas industries, catapulting it into the economic major leagues. Yet, despite its manicured parks, sophisticated restaurants and premium shopping districts, Calgary stays true to its cowboy roots so you get your Stetson hat and boots at the ready. Popular with families too, Calgary offers an excellent zoo and science centre, while its Olympic Park, the site of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, is home to North America’s fastest zipline, a 90-metre ski jump tower and – of course – a bobsled experience. The Olympic Park is just outside town so swing by when you are en route to the Rockies.

Getting Round Calgary
Calgary is an incredibly well connected city. The easiest ways to see the city’s sights is via the light rail transit (LRT), most notably the C Train which is a free hop on hop off train that will take you around the downtown area. For outside this area, you can travel on the Red Line and blue Line trains. The city is also home to a public bus network that also reaches the airport.
When to Go to Calgary
Calgary tends to sit on the cooler side with temperatures ranging from 22°C to below freezing. It’s for this reason, most travellers avoid visiting Calgary in the winter, which can be very cold and icy, unless looking to visit for a ski holiday. The summer months of June to August are the most popular times to visit, not only because the weather is ideal but it’s also when the city hosts a number of events and festivals, most notably the Calgary Stampede which takes place in July.
